Hell Comes to Frogtown

Hell Comes to Frogtown

Sandahl Bergman is “trained in the art of seduction”

We go back, way back, with our third YAFCast film. All the way back to the 80s, in fact. “Rowdy” Roddy Piper is a fertile man in a sterile world, and it his mission – nay; his obligation - to impregnate all of womankind. This is Hell Comes to Frogtown.

Here’s the IMDB description;

Sam Hell is a prisoner of the female faction who took over the US after nuclear war. Mutants thrive in the wasteland while humans face possible extinction due to infertility. Bomb strapped to his crotch, Hell is forced to rescue a group of fertile women from a harem ran by an evil mutant gang.

Time to get tenuous;

Tenuous Link

The first film I’m going to link to Hell Comes to Frogtown is Walking Tall. I could do this by starting with Shanna Lynn, one of the stunt actors in Frogtown, also did some stunt driving in 2 Fast 2 Furious, a film whose second unit Assistant Director, Ty Arnold, also worked on Transporter 2. Scott Dale an uncredited actor and stunt driver for Transporter 2, performed stunts for the brilliant Zombieland, which featured a cameo appearance by Bill Murray. A number of other actors were offered cameo parts as zombies, including Dwayne Johnson, who played the main character, Chris Vaughn, in Walking Tall.

However, I’m lazy, and that’s a lot of research to do, so, instead, I’ll just say that the role of Sam Hell in Hell Comes to Frogtown was played by Roddy Piper, better known as professional wrestler “Rowdy” Roddy Piper, and that another professional wrestler who turned actor is The Rock, also known as Dwayne Johnson, who starred in Walking Tall.

Walking Tall stars Johnny Knoxville as Dwayne Johnson’s best friend, but Knoxville is, of course, better known for putting his life in danger as part of the Jackass crew. Jackass is, quite possibly, the best way to describe what Thomas Wilson’s character, Biff, in Back to the Future is. Back to the Future also stars Christopher Lloyd as Emmett Brown, but Lloyd is also known for his role as Uncle Fester in The Addams Family alongside Anjelica Huston. Anjelica Huston was involved with Jack Nicholson who starred alongside Tom Cruise in A Few Good Men. Tom Cruise has had more starring roles than Yaz’s had hot dinners, but for the sake of this link, he played Ray Ferrier in the modern remake of War of the Worlds. One of Ray’s neighbors was played by Amy Ryan, and though this isn’t a huge role in the film, it’s enough to link us to next week’s film due to the fact that Amy Ryan plays Eileen in Yaz’s second choice, Dan in Real Life.

Troll Hunter

The Troll Hunter, played by Otto Jespersen

The Troll Hunter Himself!

On the face of it, the idea behind Troll Hunter is cool. The CGI is amazing. The box art looked epic. Not to worry! Questionable Norwegian acting – and terrible American dubbing – gave us plenty to moan about.

Here’s IMDB’s description;

A group of students investigates a series of mysterious bear killings, but learns that there are much more dangerous things going on. They start to follow a mysterious hunter, learning that he is actually a troll hunter.

Two shows in and it’s getting real tenuous…

Tenuous Link

Trolls are supernatural beings whose origins can be found in Norse mythology, along with a host of household names such as Loki, Heimdall and Odin. Odin was recently portrayed by Anthony Hopkins in the movie Thor. Anthony Hopkins is probably best known for his role of Hannibal Lecter in the movie Silence of the Lambs, based on the novel of the same name. The novel was written by Thomas Harris, an American author who was born in Jackson, Tennessee, but who now lives in South Florida. South Florida contains, among many things, the district of Miami, which was the setting for 2 Fast 2 Furious, the second of the Fast & Furious movies. Unlike the first of the movies, 2 Fast 2 Furious did not star Vin Diesel. It did, however, star Cole Hauser who, in Fast & Furious mini-link, starred alongside Vin Diesel in the movie Pitch Black. Pitch Black featured a number of scenes shot in the same desert locations that were used in Mad Max Max Beyond Thunderdome which, of course, starred Mel Gibson. Mel Gibson played the role of Martin Riggs in the Lethal Weapon series, the fourth of which starred Jet Li as kick ass negotiator, Wah Sing Ku. Li also starred in The Expendables, a movie that put a number of 80s action heroes on the same screen for and hour and forty three minutes of mindless violence. One of the bad guys in The Expendables was the aptly named Paine, played by professional wrestler, Steve Austin. Steve Austin is one of a long line of professional wrestlers to try their hand at acting, and one such wrestler is the 80s WWF sensation, Roddy Piper, who stars in next week YAFCast movie, Hell Comes to Frog Town.

Nude Nuns With Big Guns

Sister Sarah, played by Asun Ortega, wields her big gun. In the nude. And she's a nun.

As you can see, the title is pretty apt…

It’s our first podcast. Our guiding light in choosing the right films for our cause is that they seem, well, rubbish. Well, did we ever choose well this time as Yaz’s choice, Nude Nuns With Big Guns, gets us off the mark.

Here’s what IMDB has to say about it;

Upon taking her vows to become a nun, Sister Sarah is abused, brainwashed and drugged into submission by the corrupt clergy.

Struggled to follow the tenuous link at the end of the show? Here it is in all its textual glory. Mmmm, textual…

Tenuous Link

Nude Nuns with Big Guns is full of actors I’d never heard of before, and one of those actors is Perry D’Marco, who plays Father Carlittos. D’Marco also starred in an episode of Malcolm in the Middle, where he played a character simply known as “Teacher”. Teacher sounds like Kreacher, the muggle-hating house elf from the Harry Potter movies. The Harry Potter movies tell the tale of a bespectacled young wizard who attends wizarding school at Hogwarts. Most of the exterior shots of Hogwarts were filmed using Alnwick Castle in Northumberland. Alnwick Castle has been using for filming a number of times, including british comedy Blackadder, and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. Robin Hood was played by Kevin Costner, but the role was originally offered to Cary Elwes, who turned it down. Ironically, Elwes went on to play Robin Hood in the spoof movie, Robin Hood: Men in Tights, directed by Mel Brooks. Mel Brooks is responsible for a number of spoof movies over the years, but perhaps his most memorable one is Blazing Saddles, a spoof western about a black sheriff and his deputy, The Waco Kid, played by Gene Wilder. Gene Wilder played Willy Wonka in the original movie based on novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Another movie based on the book was released in 2005, directed by Tim Burton. Tim Burton is involved with Helena Bonham Carter who starred alongside Edward Norton in the movie Fight Club. Fight Club also featured hard rock singer, Meatloaf. Meatloaf was once supported on a UK tour by Norwegian singer/songwriter, Marion Raven, whose native country is also the setting for next week’s film, Troll Hunter!
